Echidnas' blow over wheatmen

Rugby union: For the fourth week in a row, the Roma Echidnas' have walked away from the field victorious, after they clinched a convincing 31-24 win over Dalby Wheatmen.

In a well fought game of rugby, A-grade Echidnas captain Matt Wilkie said it had been the toughest side the boys had faced this season.

"It was one of the most physical games we've had, we haven't been tested like that this season,” Wilkie said. "It was good to finally see how we went under pressure, and everyone stuck together and did their part.”

Wilkie said he was proud of the team for how they came back from being two tries down with 20 minutes to go.

"We were asleep a bit in the first half and the first bit of the second,” Wilkie admitted.

"We managed to pull it together to rally a good come back.

"The last couple of games we've always been in the lead, we've always had several tries and put heaps of points on our opposition quite early on, but to be down with 10 minutes to go, and needing two tries to equal the score, the boys definitely put on their A game.

"Getting that last try on the buzzer, just felt unreal, and the birthday boy AJ Riley was pretty happy with himself.”

The boys will take a break this weekend, before they ask their supporters to turn out to Gallas Fox Park next weekend for Old Boys Day, as they toe up against last year's Risdon Cup winners, Goondiwindi.

"Having them here in Roma first will benefit us hugely, we want to get as many people on the field and on the side lines as we can,” Wilkie said.

"We can't get too ahead of ourselves, but that will be the peak of the mountain and our toughest game.

"We're pretty excited about how this season is going, we're showing we can play some really good football.”
