Don't miss the Brisbane International this summer. MIKE FREY

Everything you knew was on in Brisbane just got better

IF IT is diversity you want, Brisbane is the place to get it.

This summer, there are stacks of things to do in and around the city to please every family member.

From theatre shows and musicals, to sporting games, adventure activities and museums, there's not much that isn't on offer in the state's capital.

Here are our five favourite things to do this summer:

1.       Live cricket, all summer: The Gabba gets to host its first day-night Test match this summer, with the Aussies taking on Pakistan from December 15. Next up is the Victoria Bitter One Day International at The Gabba on January 13. The Big Bash is also back and the Brisbane Heat's first game of the tournament is against the Hobart Hurricanes. In the Women's Big Bash, Holly Ferling and the Heat will take on the Adelaide Strikers in the sole WBBL home game of the season on January 21.

2.       Matilda the Musical, Dec 2-29, 2016 and Jan 2-17, 2017: The multi-award winning musical from the Royal Shakespeare Company, inspired by the genius of Roald Dahl, is here this summer. With book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by Tim Minchin, Matilda the Musical is the story of an extraordinary girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny.

3.       Brisbane International, Jan 1-8, 2017: Spanish powerhouse/perennial wedgie-plucker Rafael Nadal has stepped up to appear at the tournament for the first time. Ranked fifth in the world, Nadal is a modern master of the game and is an undisputed genius on clay. You'd be mad to miss him, so catch him in action.

4.       Cirque du Soleil KOOZA, Nov 24 - December 18, 2016: The blue-and-yellow big top is coming back to Brisbane with an all-new production, KOOZA. Cirque du Soleil's latest production combines thrilling acrobatic performance with the art of clowning in a journey of self-discovery through a comic kingdom of eccentric characters, electrifying thrills and out-of-the-box surprises.

5.       Christmas in Brisbane, November 25 - December 24, 2016: Each year the streets of the inner-city come alive with Brisbane's four-week program of free festive fun. Kicking off with the official Lighting of the Christmas Tree on November 25, from there the rolling series of events includes the un-missable Christmas Parade and Pantomime, City Hall projections, fireworks, dive-in Christmas cinema, Christmas markets and much more. Adding to the program this year, Roma Street Parkland will have an enchanted garden and there will be fun happening right up to Christmas Eve. Plus, Queen St Mall is the destination for gift-buying this Christmas with big international brands Uniqlo, H&M, Forever 21, Zara and more.
