Junior cricketers bowl coaches over

Cricket: Keen cricketers donned whites and took to the field last weekend, playing under the watchful eyes of the best coaches in the region.

Darling Downs and South West Queensland cricket coaches Owen and Janet Sperling, Norm Martin and Mick Carroll shared their knowledge with almost 30 players.

St George Junior Cricket Club president Phil Lockwood said it had been an important experience for local junior players to have exposure to high-level coaching.

“It’s always good to get some high-level sportspeople into the bush,” he said.

“It was good for them to come out and have a look at how our kids are going and it was really well received by all our players.”

Working on drills and finessing technical skills, the players fielded, bowled and batted their way through Sunday morning.

“I think it creates interest in cricket in our town. Junior cricket has only been back up and running here for four or so years,” Lockwood said.

“We also reintroduced rep cricket, which gives the kids something to work towards.”

Seventy junior players have already registered for the season, with Lockwood expecting a few more to come through.
