Meals on Wheels awarded for service

THE team from Meals on Wheels Roma has been recognised for all its time and effort in the community.

Last Wednesday, Meals on Wheels received an award from Queensland Volunteering after being nominated for the Volunteering Impact Award.

The award recognises the positive, measurable and enduring impact of a volunteer program within a Queensland community that has been pivotal and life-changing.

President of Meals on Wheels Roma Ray Howson and roster officer John Cole were overwhelmed by the award.

"I think it is great recognition for our volunteers because without them we don't provide the service that we do. It is what they do for us in the organisation that makes our deliveries,” Mr Howson said.

"We are delivering food on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and average about 200 meals a week and about 5000 meals a year, but new volunteers are always welcome and would be on a monthly roster,” Mr Cole said.

The Roma Meals on Wheels service has food supplied through Rustic Crust catering, located at the Roma Bowls Club and provide all the required nutrition and dietary needs.

Mr Howson said aside from just delivering food, their team of volunteers also provide a wellness check and a social check.

"We are finding that as people are ageing the demand for our services is increasing,” he said.

"Meals on Wheel's motto is more than just a meal because we also have to do a wellness check so we make sure the client is ok and see if they have any concerns they want us to contact their next of kin.

"The other things we encourage is a social check as well, because often these people are by themselves and might not see people day to day,” he said.

One thing Mr Howson and Mr Cole have noticed throughout their time with Meals on Wheels is the stigma associated with the service.

"Some people don't feel they need the service and that is a real concern because we don't know if they are getting the right nutrition that they should be getting,” Mr Howson said.

National Meals on Wheels day will be celebrated in Roma and nationally on Wednesday, August 29.
