Woman bashes former schoolmate for smiling at her

KEWA Corrina Ryan has left a former classmate bruised and battered after she smiled at her, a court has heard.

The 18-year-old Roma woman faced Roma Magistrates Court on Tuesday for the charge of assaults occasioning bodily harm.

The court heard on July 11, Ryan unlawfully assaulted a victim, a former school friend, at a Wright Street address.

Police prosecutor sergeant Heather Whiting said Ryan and the victim had a history of confrontations in the past.

"At approximately 8.30pm, the defendant, victim and witness attended a party," sgt Whiting said.

"The victim was approached by the witness and was told that she needs to leave the party.

"The defendant was told the same and said she would start to punch the victim."

The court heard as the victim was saying goodbye to the party organiser, Ryan grabbed her by the left arm and punched her ten times as she turned around.

The victim was hit in the mouth, eyes, nose, throat and back of head.

"The defendant used enough force and punches to cause the defendant to lose focus in her eyes and caused her pain," sgt Whiting said.

The victim also sustained injuries to her mouth and bruising on her right eye.

Sgt Whiting said when Ryan attended an interview at the police station, she made full admission to the attack.

Ryan said the victim, "had been smiling at me all night and was pissing me off, so I decided to hit her".

Sgt Whiting told the court that there "doesn't seem to be any reason" for the attack.

"Seems like a quite gratuitous form of violence," sgt Whiting said.

Solicitor Laurie Parker said the victim used terms like 'black c--t' and 'psycho'.

He also said Ryan is applying for jobs to become a dental assistant.

"I've explained to Kewa, if you're coming before the court and getting convictions, those doors will simply close," Mr Parker said.

Magistrate Saggers said he'd take into account the background of the incident.

"You've got to know how to respond," Magistrate Saggers said.

"Because the consequences to both of you could be more serious than what they are today.

"Just leave it, don't let it blow up.

Ryan was slapped with 12 months probation.
