WOMEN’S DAY: Sharpe help engineer a more equal world
Roma's Sharpe Engineering has been in business for over 25 years, and while it's predominantly a male dominated industry, Ellen Bain nee Sharpe said they have fortunately seen the rise of women in executive and engineering based roles over the years.
The Chief Administrative Officer has been in the family business for over 18 years and said her mother Anne has been the most influential woman to shape her life.
"Her determination and commitment to lifelong learning and education has shaped the way we operate, not only as a business but also the way we operate as a family unit," she said.
In celebrating all things women on March 8, Ms Bain said the day is to acknowledge women's achievements and to raise awareness for equality.
"Although it is still a very male dominated industry, we are seeing more and more women in management, executive, engineering and production-based roles within the industry," she said.
"It's great to have diversity represented within our industry.
"Women have just as valuable traits and skills that should be championed.
"I love this years' theme of #choosetochallenge. Through staying educated and informed, you are better equipped to challenge and see it through to change."
Ms Bain said her role in the family business has been a natural progression, since starting out in admin and accounts.
She said if she could offer her 13-year-old self any advice it would be to "stay open to new experiences and opportunities, not everyone's version of success is the same nor is the path to get there".
